Lt. Gen. Armstrong - On The Air War in Vietnam

Producer: Victor Vukosavljevic Duration: 24:00 minutes

Vietnam, Operation Rolling Thunder: A joint effort between the USAF, the US NAVY and South Vietnamese air force, designed to cripple North Vietnam’s ability and willingness to wage war in the South. Lieutenant Gen. Spence Armstrong took part in this key operation piloting and leading F105’s into battle as an flight commander and later as an operations officer.

A veteran of 100 missions, he and his men faced fierce opposition as they tried to survive a gauntlet of sneak MiG attacks, flak fire, and SAM missile strikes. Lieutenant General Armstrong also dealt with the challenges of fighting an air war while restrained by the rules of engagement imposed by Washington.
