September 6th, 1976

On this day, Viktor Ivanovich Belenko of the Soviet Union successfully defects to the West, landing his Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 'FoxBat' in Hakodate, Japan. Belenko is granted asylum and his MiG is disassembled for study.
